The Google Business Profile checklist for El Paso service businesses

Nineteen checks you can do in about 30 minutes, straight from Google’s own rules. The fields customers act on, the mistakes that break the guidelines, and what’s different when you work in El Paso.

In short

If you read nothing else

  • Your Google Business Profile is what Google shows for your name, hours, phone and location in Search and Maps. Customers act on it before they ever see your website.
  • Most problems are basic: an old number, wrong hours, a vague category, or a name stuffed with keywords that breaks Google’s rules.
  • The checklist below covers 19 checks in about 30 minutes, each one taken from Google’s own help pages.
  • In El Paso, three things deserve extra care: service areas that cross into New Mexico, serving customers in Spanish, and showing that you’re veteran-owned if you are.

Why your profile matters

When someone in El Paso searches for a plumber, a roofer or a tax preparer, the first thing they often see isn’t a website. It’s a short panel with a name, a star rating, hours, a phone button and a map. That panel is your Google Business Profile. It puts a call button and your hours in front of a customer before they ever reach your website.

Google says three things shape which businesses appear in local results: relevance (how well a profile matches the search), distance and prominence (how well known the business is). You can’t move your shop closer to every customer. You can make sure your profile is complete, accurate and clearly about what you do. Google’s own advice is to make the information “as complete as possible”.

Your profile is also public information that AI tools can find. If you want to see what ChatGPT, Google and Gemini say about your business today, our guide What does ChatGPT say about your business? shows how to check.

The 19-point checklist

Open your profile in another tab: search for your business name on Google while signed in, or go to business.google.com. Work down the list. Tick what’s already right, and fix what isn’t as you go.

What’s different in El Paso

Google’s rules are the same everywhere. Working in El Paso raises three questions they answer in specific ways.

  • Your customers may be in two states

If you also work in Santa Teresa, Sunland Park, Anthony or Las Cruces, those customers are in New Mexico. That’s fine: list them as service areas by city or ZIP code, up to 20 in total. Google’s limits are that the overall area shouldn’t extend more than about two hours’ drive from where your business is based, and that you can’t set a radius around your address. List the places you actually serve, not every town within reach.

  • Say so if you serve customers in Spanish

If your team helps customers in Spanish, put it in your description in plain words, for example “We serve customers in English and Spanish.” It’s a fact a customer can act on, and it costs nothing to say.

  • Veteran-owned? You can show it

El Paso is home to Fort Bliss. If your business is veteran-owned, Google lets you add the Veteran-owned identity attribute to your profile. Like every attribute, use it only when it’s true.

Five mistakes Google’s rules warn about

These come straight from Google’s guidelines. Each one can cost you, and some can put the profile itself at risk.

  • A name stuffed with keywords. “[Your name] | Best AC Repair El Paso 24/7” instead of just the name on your truck.
  • An address customers can’t visit. A P.O. box or virtual office doesn’t qualify. If you go to customers, use service areas instead.
  • A call-center number. Google asks for a local number that reaches your business directly whenever possible.
  • A long list of loosely related categories. Fewer, more specific categories describe you better.
  • Buying or filtering reviews. Google’s review policy prohibits offering payment, discounts or free services for reviews, and also prohibits selectively asking only happy customers.

Google’s guidelines say that unnecessary content in a business name could result in suspension of the profile, and Google reserves the right to suspend access to profiles that break the rules. Reviews posted because of an incentive are removed.

Keep it right: the monthly habit

A profile isn’t a one-time job. Hours change, phone numbers change, customers upload photos, and reviews arrive whether you answer them or not. Pick one day a month and spend five minutes:

  1. Read it as a customer would. Name, hours, phone, website link. Click the call button and the website button from your phone.

  2. Answer new reviews. Briefly and specifically. Thank people by what they hired you for, and take problems offline with a phone number or email.

  3. Look ahead a month. Any holiday or closure coming? Set Special hours now.

Every inspection I was part of in the Army started with the basics: understanding what was expected. Is the information current, and does the person responsible know it’s current? A Google profile is the same inspection. What costs a small business a customer usually isn’t complicated. It’s an old phone number nobody checked.

Questions owners ask

Do I need a storefront to have a Google Business Profile?

No. A business that travels to its customers can have a profile as a service-area business. Remove the address from the profile and list the cities or ZIP codes you serve instead. You do need in-person contact with customers; a virtual office doesn’t qualify.

Should I put “El Paso” or my service in my business name?

No, unless it is part of your real business name. Google’s guidelines say the name should match your real-world name, without added service descriptions or taglines. Adding them breaks the rules and can put the profile at risk.

How many categories should I choose?

As few as you need. Pick the most specific primary category, then add others only if they describe what your business is. Google says categories affect your local ranking.

Can I give customers a discount for leaving a review?

No. Google’s help center says offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews is strictly prohibited. Google’s review policy also prohibits asking only the customers you expect to be happy. Ask every customer the same way, with a link or QR code, and let them say what they think.

I changed my hours. Why haven’t they updated?

Google reviews edits before they go live, and some changes can require verification again. Check back after a day or two, and make sure the profile still shows as verified.
